Great tips, Anna. Thanks for sharing. While I've been published in the NYT I haven't had any success with the Tiny Love Story. I'll keep trying.

Was this your first big byline, Anna?

It wasn’t, but it was one of the first. The first yes I got from a national outlet was from HuffPost :)

Do these get any attention? Did good things happen after you published this?

Great question! I did connect with a number of readers after the two TLS pubs. I was invited to appear in a documentary. But most significantly, they are NYT bylines, and I was able to add that to my bio when I pitched other outlets. I ended up getting pitches accepted by other big pubs like Slate and Salon, and I believe editors paid more attention to my words because I had that NYT byline in my bio.

What a precise and inspiring guide to a process that has stumped me. The shorter the story, the harder the telling.

Great advice, Anna! I love your suggestion to start with an image and to lean in to metaphor.
